We're very pleased to report that registrations are up for this year's runLawrence Thanksgiving Day 5K (Nov 28). Please sign up if you haven't already done so. We continue to offer the family discount for families of three or more.

We do need more volunteers to work as course marshals, more so than past years. As recommended by the City of Lawrence we need to monitor not only all the corners but the street locations in between to better guarantee a safe event. If you can help, sign up. Here's the link. Call if you have any questions.

On the Haskell campus yesterday and I couldn't remember whether Oct 12 was the birthday of Dwight Eisenhower, former President from Abilene, or the original date Congress chose to celebrate Columbus Day. And Haskell Institute was where Jim Thorpe went to school. Here's a reprint of "Thoughts on Ike and Jim Thorpe." Eisenhower's birthday is Oct. 14. - Gene Wee

More news from the marathon clubs:

At Woodlawn Elementary: We are doing great at marathon so far this year! We already have some kids that have reached the 13.1 goal! - Melissa Crum

Prairie Park's Run Club: We are off to a great start this school year. with about 85 members this year which is great. We run on Tuesdays right after school. We have had some really great parents step up and volunteer every week to help the kids along the course.  We have struggled to keep our kids running and have lots who will run 1 lap and quit.  We hope to keep our member numbers into spring and plan to keep running every week while weather permits.  - Elissa Koelling

Eudora's Cardinal Marathon Club is up and running this year! We began right after Labor Day with 300+ participants this year running at 3 sites in town - one at Eudora Elementary School and two at after school programs for students in our district. The kids run twice a week weather permitting for about a half hour each meeting date. So far we have ran over 2,000 miles and have students already reaching their half marathon goal on their personal goals of running 2 and 3 full marathons this school year! - Barbara Hartwell

Oct 2 - Congratulations James on the win!

Photo of James Wilson.CHICAGO — Despite heavy rain on Sunday, an estimated 30,000 people headed to Jackson Park and Lake Shore Drive for the Hoka One One Chicago Half Marathon.

James Wilson, 27, of Lawrence, Kansas won the men’s race with a time of 1:06:02. Dan Kremske, 30, of Chicago, came in second with the same finishing time. James got the photo finish. Nate Guthals, 28, of Olathe, Kansas, was third in 1:06:46.

“It’s a lot cooler with the rain and I’m happy about that. The leaders got it rolling early and I found myself alone by mile four or five. Dan was coming in hot at the end and luckily I had a little bit left in the tank for a sprint finish. I’m happy with the way things went – Chicago has been good to me.”
