The third time was the charm for Eric Vazquez, of Lawrence, who led from start
to finish in winning the Thanksgiving Day 5K in cold but sunny conditions.
Vazquez, who was runner-up the last two years, ran 14:49 -- the second-fastest
all-time for the race -- to finish comfortably ahead of Lenny Njoroge, of
Topeka. Vazquez wins $250 for his overall victory, and Njoroge receives $125
for second.
The women's race saw a closer finish as Mirena Goncalves, of Overland Park,
ran 19:01 to win the $250 first-place prize, just ahead of Ashley Turpin, of
Meriden, with several other women close behind.
In the age-graded masters competition, Don Turner, of Shawnee, ran an
age-adjusted 14:38 (21:45 at age 76) for the $125 first prize, ahead of Aaron
Brogan's age-adjusted 14:44 (16:56 at age 51) for the $100 second-place award.
Michelle Andrew, of Topeka, was the women's winner in 17:19 (20:52 at age 53),
ahead of Melissa Spratt's 17:35 (25:20 at age 67) and the same prize awards.
Andrew was the overall female winner in 2017.
A total of 1,456 runners and walkers took part in the 22nd running, held every

We have some amazing people who help with the runs in Lawrence. Around mile marker 9 of yesterday's Kansas Half Marathon, Ken Fangohr noticed volunteer bicycle pacer Elim Myers walking her bicycle along with a runner who was walking. Brent Barnett was injured but was only able to walk slowly. This was four hours after the event had started and Brent was by himself. Elim stayed with him all the way to the finish line. A great job for someone who truly cares!
