23Aug21 Defend Lawrence

Since 2014 citizens get up to run at 5:05 am to defend Lawrence. That's when Quantrill's Raid came to Lawrence in 1863. Nitpickers claim it was not 5:05 daylight saving time, but auto traffic picks up by 5:45 so it's safer to run on the streets rther than an hour later. It was a humid morning. LHS Assistant XC coach, Jacob Kucza, is running in the Leadville 100 trail race this weekend! The race starts in the town of Leadville (11,000 ft) and travels over Hope Pass (14,000+ ft) and back. He has been doing countless hill-related repeats around KU's campus, Signal Oak in Baldwin, and Queen's Road to help prepare. He took part in the "I Double Ogg Dare You" 3 Hour endurance run on April 30th at Ogg Road in Shawnee Mission to test his stamina. (submitted by Kyle Morgison)

Buddy system encourages this group of Lawrence women to stay active in their 70s.

Rain falls as five friends shuffle into J & S Coffee one by one. After morning greetings, a few low grumbles commence. The earth needs the rain, but lightning shuts down swimming pools — even the indoor kind. Wet pavement isn’t ideal for running and biking, either. But first, coffee. more (by Tracia Massenthin, Lawrence Times, Aug 18, 2023)

Fat Ass Runs: A Brief History - This Saturday's Lawrence Trail Hawks Birthday Run is a Fat Ass run. What are they?

"Many people wonder why I would call a run a “Fat Ass,” and some even think that I came up with that term myself. When we think of runners, we don’t typically think of big behinds. According to a March 1997 article in Ultrarunning Magazine, credit for the term “Fat Ass” goes to Joe Oakes of the San Francisco Bay Area." more (Dave Dutro, from OutThere Outdoors, March 27, 2017)

Registration is now open for the 20th Annual Thanksgiving Day 5K and 1K Fun Run. Signups this year will come with mitten/gloves by Nathan. It's summer and hot, but you'll be glad to have mitten/gloves when the weather gets cold again. We're fortunate that Woodlawn School didn't close and we have the same, fast and flat race course. Remember it's a great tradition to start your holiday with a 5K run.

Finish line at the 2004 Thanksgiving Day 5K.

Managing Taper Madness - The hardest part of training may just be getting through the last crazy-making weeks before race day.

Feeling a little edgy?
Cramming all the food in your face at any given moment?
How’s that bizarre twinge in your knee that you’ve never noticed in your entire life?
Welcome to your (temporary) new normal. You’re in the throes of taper madness, and while things feel weird right now, we promise that it will pass. How do we know? Because we’ve been there too. more
